A Brief History of Baby Strollers

Ever since the Victorian era (and possibly before) people have been using baby prams to transport their children around. Since then, strollers and pushchairs have evolved and the line of products currently on the market at the moment is nothing short of amazing when you consider the amount of design and engineering that goes into each model.

The first ever 'baby transport device' was designed by an Englishman named William Kent. What he created was essentially a basket on wheels with a piece of string attached to a goat (which would then pull it along).

By the late 1800's ideas were evolving and the first ever pushchair/pram combo was made available for the public to buy. This device was revolutionary in the way that it could be a pram one minute (since prams are more suited to babies) and a stroller the next (which are more suited to infants).

In the early 1900's many new additions were added to strollers as they became more commonplace. Such additions included the use of a brake (which parents could control using their feet) and basket attachments, where parents could attach their shopping basket to the pushchair so that they didn't have to carry it around.

Nowadays, companies are focused on making strollers that are extremely compact and light so that they can be taken anywhere. They have to make many different types of strollers for jogging, for shopping and for more than one child at a time. They also try to make them as convenient for the parents as possible by adding extra pockets for purses, shopping and whatever you may by carrying when out with your baby.
